Pragnell Championship Cup

The amateur doubles tournament running alongside the World Championships sponsored by Pragnell.
The weekend saw the first qualifying boxes for the finals day on Saturday.
Box A
Simon Hobson and Alan Moug were victorious in the first qualifying box earning an early start on Saturday with three wins. Andrew Hamilton and Jeremy Hawkins earned the runners up spot with two victories. The appearance of Camden Riviere and Tim Chisholm in the dedans wasn't enough to spur their countryman Laurence Berman on sufficiently to carry his partner Tony Branfield over the line finishing third with a single win. The fourth placed pair without a win will remain nameless for fear of embarrassment.
Box B
The second box saw James Holden and David Phillips take the top spot with three wins including an 6/5 win over second place pair T&RA streaming guru Ben Geytenbeek and John Miller who finished with 2 wins. Rich Wills and Martin Rogers managed a single win to grab 3rd place. Again discretion prohibits me from naming the box tail enders.
Box C
This proved to be a much tighter box with no dominant pairing. The intriguing high handicap match between club champion Tom Bomford and partner James Richardson giving o40, r30, once serve banned Tambour to Bernie Spratt and Peter Hutchinson went the way of the high handicappers. But that was to be the only defeat for Tom and James taking the box over Simon Wallis and Bill Simcox also with two wins. Spratt and Hutchinson took third with one win and Richard Ramjane and Dan Warboys completed the group alsowith a single win.
Box D
A five team box with a close finish that saw one pair with three wns, one with one win and three teams with two wins. The clear winners Mark Leaf and Ronald Patterson losing only to Peter Mawson and Candida Nicholls who in turn provided Chris Marguerie and Bruce Paxton with their solitary win. Causing the markers a few headaches were Chris Lintott and Minty Oldham with a +3 set difference, Mawson and Nicholls, 0, and Martin Trees and Matt Parkman on -3. So it was Lintott & Oldham that claimed the runners up birth and a place in the quarter finals on Saturday.
