Under 21 Trophy

We were pleased to be able to restart the club junior championship after Covid restrictions and it was a fiercely competitive tournament. With three entrants, the tournament was able to take on a novel structure with a round robin group deciding the two finalists based on their scores from the box. Additionally, the score in the box match was used as the first set of the final so it was important to play well from the start.

The first match saw a repeat of the 2019 final with reigning champion Alex Gordon taking on Gus West in a closely fought match with Alex narrowly beating Gus 6-5. The second match saw 2018 champion Harry Walsh take on Alex and win 6-3. The third match of Gus against Harry resulted in a win for Harry 6-4.

With two wins to Harry and one to Alex, the final was set, with Harry taking the 6-3 set win from the box set through into the final. Alex therefore needed to win the two remaining sets to retain his title. Harry dominated the service end with the younger man an infrequent visitor to the crowd watching in the dedans. Harry's serve was on form and caused Alex to struggle as the ball frequently fell to a good length off the penthouse. Harry took the set 6-0, leading to a final score of 6-3, 6-0. This is the fourth and final time Harry will be able to win the age group competition.
