Hatfield won this encounter 3-2, but only after some very keenly contested matches.
First on court was Doug Holden who, after a slow start, challenged his much more experienced opponent but lost in two close sets. Next on was Jon Lambdon who suffered another close two set defeat before Terence Drane took to the court and reversed MM’s fortunes with an exciting win. 1-6, 6-1, 5-5 40all.. Terence serving to win the match played the final well judged shot that just cleared the service line. All very tense.
MM were now in with a chance. Unfortunately the pressure was too much for John Franklin, possibly distracted by the pink penthouse paint, who lost. 3-1 to Hatfield.
The final match and a chance to restore some pride fell to Peter Lewis, winning comfortably with some unusual double backhanded returns. Very effective.
Final score 3-2 to Hatfield.
Thanks to Hatfield for their generous hospitality and a very enjoyable day’s tennis.
Thanks to John Franklin for the match report.
